The conditional mood, often expressed using Konjunktiv II in German, is used to describe hypothetical situations, polite requests, or actions that would happen under certain conditions.

It is similar to the English "would" + verb construction.

Formation

The conditional tense is usually formed with the auxiliary verb würden + the infinitive of the main verb.

Alternatively, certain verbs use their specific Konjunktiv II forms.

Examples

Ich würde zur Schule gehen.
I would go to school.

Er würde Fußball spielen.
He would play football.

Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich Deutsch lernen.
If I had more time, I would learn German.
